Just a few industries currently suffering from the skills shortage in the UK include Engineering, Accountancy, Construction and Logistics. And the issue has progressively worsened over the years. In 2011, there were 91,000 vacancies unfilled because a skills shortage. By 2015, that number had grown to 209,000, taking up 22% of the UK’s 928,000 job vacancies.
The 2016 edition of the CBI’s annual survey revealed that out of 500 surveyed employers, 69% of them had been unable to recruit employees with the required skillset, an increase by 14% from the 2015 edition.
Are we moving in the right direction?
Training remains the main issue when it comes to the shortfall in skills. However, there are significant efforts being made by employers and the government to improve training and increase apprenticeships available to train our future workforce.
The new apprenticeship levy is another step taken by the government to ensure large companies are creating more apprenticeship positions, and giving younger workers the opportunity to learn and earn at the same time. Unfortunately, this is just part of the long-term revival. The damage has already been done and it will take a long time for deprived industries to recover.

The Millennial generation – people born between the early 1980s and the mid-1990s. Accountancy firm Deloitte predicts that by 2025, Millennials will make up 75% of the workplace.
